The city of Belo Horizonte is also known as Beagá. It is the third largest capital city in Brazil and has a population of around 2.4 million. The early 1700s saw the first settlements in the area. The modern day city was, however, built in the 1890s. The city replaced the earlier capital of Minas Gerais, Ouro Preto. The republican elite of the state selected Belo Horizonte to be the state government headquarters.
The city's blocks and streets were initially geometrically drawn and planned out. The downtown area displays some interesting features. There are streets here which have been named after Indian Tribes, and these streets intersect others which have been named after states of Brazil, at 90 degrees main avenues cross the streets at 45 degrees. The layout is almost like that of a chessboard!
For the visitor, there is a lot to see and do in and around Belo Horizonte and many exciting tours to enjoy. The Complexo do Caraça or the Caraça Complex, and the Serra do Cipó or Liana´s Hill are two landmarks of the area. The lovely environment in these two picturesque spots is further enhanced by the geological formations and the beautiful species native to this area. The area is famous for its biodiversity.
Belo Horizonte is located close to several historical sites, rich with architectural treasures from the colonial days. The UNESCO has recognised the old capital city Ouro Preto as a site of history and culture.
Belo Horizonte is blessed with pleasant weather all year round. The temperature varies between 16°C and 25°C (61°F and 77°F). The city is situated in the southeast at an altitude of around 858 metres.
Belo Horizonte is rightfully called the bar capital of the world, for it has the highest number of bars, per capita, in the world! The bars, along with grand cultural shows, liven up the city's busy nightlife. Some of the butecos, or bars, are focal places where people get together every night to enjoy the wonderful music as well as meet people.
